I'm starting ANOTHER project
with an accompanying SubStack Newsletter
To be honest, this isn’t a NEW project… it’s part of the one I’ve been tipping away at for the past 10 years (or more). When I wrote my dissertation, I collected 60+ oral histories and most, if not all, of these stories are interesting and entertaining if Irish music and culture is your thing.
I’ll say it now, this is not a project targeted at generating loads of subscriptions and likes. I will likely only post a newsletter a month, two if the weather is bad and I’m closeted in my studio… and I’m on a roll. The community I’d like to share those with should be small, interested and generally supportive of the voices I’m bringing to the page.
But basically, I’m trying to find a home for an archive of all these transcriptions1 because it’s taken me years to find the actual files I created back in 2009/2010… thereby postponing indefinitely the work of writing the book, Your Granny’s Gramophone. I’m still going to do that at some point. But the first step is collecting, documenting, and archiving the foundational material. It amazes me that there are still people who want to talk about the gramophone that was in their parents’ or grandparents’ homes—although they are not always comfortable with being recorded. That’s why these interviews are so precious.
So here’s the deal…
If you want to “subscribe” to the new newsletter (it’s free), click on this LINK. No pressure… I’m just letting you all know because you are special to me and I know you will respect the storytellers and my intentions in sharing their stories.
Let the journey begin!
FYI — I have releases from all my storytellers to use our interviews for my own work.
