Organization Charts


Description:

"Organization charts are diagrams that show how people, operations, functions, equipment, activities, etc. are organized, arranged, structured, and/or interrelated." (Harris, 1999, p.260)

Other communication formats:
Site maps, Graphs and charts, tables. Rich pictures, and Concept maps can also represent aspects of organizations and their interrelationships.

Strengths:

  • Standardized formats exploit prior knowledge in experienced users
  • Use of arrows clearly indicates relationships
  • They are sequential, linear, logical

Uses:

  • Communication
  • Planning

Weaknesses:

  • There is an upfront learning curve
  • Some relationships don't fit neatly symbols
