Flow Charts


Description:

"A flow chart is a diagram that visually displays interrelated information such as events, steps in a process, functions, etc., in an organized fashion, such as sequentially or chronologically. The things represented can be tangible or intangible." (Harris, 1999, p.153)

Flow charts, graphs and charts, tables. Also referred to as decision diagrams, decision charts.

Strengths:

  • Standardized symbols exploit prior knowledge in experienced users
  • Use of arrows clearly indicates relationships
  • They are sequential, linear, logical

Uses:

  • Describe processes, ideas, networks
  • Define analyze processes and procedures
  • Training aid
  • Document processes and procedures
  • Illustrate requirements

Weaknesses:

  • There is an upfront learning curve
  • Some relationships don't fit neatly symbols
